The Shape of You
The person you are today has been shaped by the people that have been in your life.
That’s not hard to believe.
For example, you got your love of baseball from watching your dad’s favorite team on TV. You have a love for learning because your mother worked as a teacher.
Shadow of the Past
On a deeper level, how you feel about yourself is also heavily influenced by the relationship experiences you had growing up.
We tend to act out those internalized beliefs in our current relationships, whether or not we realize it.
These patterns sabotage our chances for happy connections, and we don’t even know it.
What unhealthy messages about yourself have you internalized?
For instance, if you had a father who was angry with you all the time, you may feel that you constantly have to prove yourself to others.
Or if your parents did not spend much time with you as a child, you might grow up believing that you aren’t worth the attention.
When you get stuck in your relationships or have conflicts with people, do you notice a familiar pattern?
